Period Seven
Teaching target
1. Review the past continuous tense.
Explain the Exx. about the tenses
2. Have a listening practice.
3. Finish speaking part---B Speak up.
Teaching courses:
1. Revision
Explain the Exx. about the tenses.
2. Listening practice--- Taking telephone messages.
We are going to have a further practice in basic note taking.
Ask the Ss to do the following when they take telephone messages.
 Read the message form and get an idea of what should be written down.
 Pay attention to the spelling of the caller’s name and phone number. They are usually repeated in the conversation.
 Write only the necessary notes for the message.
 Tell the Ss that they do not need to write more than a few brief notes. It is probably best to play the whole recording first, while students just listen. Then play it again while students complete the forms.
3. Speak up----Group practice
Work in groups. Discuss whether students help with the housework when they are at home.
a. One student acts as secretary and asks others about whether or not they help their parents with housework.
b. The group secretary reports the results to the class using the model report provided in the Students’ Book.
Model:
There are five students in our group.
One student prepares meals. Four students don’t prepare meals.
Two students wash dishes. Three don’t wash dishes.
…student(s) dry / dries dishes. …
…student(s) sometimes / never offer(s) to help…
…student(s) do(es) these types of housework: dusting, watering plants…

This part shows students how to perform the functions of offering, accepting and refusing help politely.
a. Read the dialogue in Exx A1 ad discuss the questions with the students.
Q1. Tony offers to help Joyce three times. What are the sentences he uses to offer help?
Q2. Joyce rejects Tony’s offers twice. What are the sentences she uses to reject his offers?
Q3. Joyce accepts Tony’s third offer. What are the two sentences she uses to accept Tony’s offer?
b. Practice the dialogue in pairs.
c. Tell the students to work in pairs to complete the guided conversation in Exx A2. Check the answers.
3. More practice:
Ask the students to scan the passage about Benjamin Franklin. Then find the answers. If the statement is false, ask them to provide the reason.
